Today's Post: Brought to you by the letter "I"

A number of words crossed my mind as I walked into the free-weights area of my local gym to kick off day 1 of the New Rules of Lifting for Women.  No not THOSE words, well, maybe a couple.

There was not a single woman working out on any of the free weight equipment.  This saddened me for a couple of reasons.  First, I would have no "solidarity" in this environment filled with testosterone and uber-fit dudes.  Second, even a relatively fit woman such as myself didn't have the guts to work out in there.  Are women so intimidated by these guys that we're afraid to work out next to them on the same equipment they're using?  Why do we feel completely inept when it comes to using free weights and machines?  Because we are certainly NOT inferior to these men (in fact, I bet I could literally run circles around a few of them!).

What are we then?

We are inexperienced.  No one has taught us to use this equipment.  It is not intuitive (at least the majority of it isn't).  We are not destined to be ineffectual at strength training.  We just need someone to show us the way, because the last time I checked, there wasn't a sign above the door that said "Penis Required for Entry".

  1. WOW!
I am totally intimidated! I only joined gym last week...the weights section is SO VERY new to me.

How was your first day?!? I fear the pushups and prone jackknife thingie.

    1. I posted over at Daily Mile about the actual workout.

  2. I agree. I think I'm going to like the fact that I was just offered use of the neighbors collection of free weights and expertise, but I'm going to go with the dumbbells to begin with for now.

    1. I need a local guy here who would be willing to be my "trainer" but I don't see any knocking down my door.

comments make us smile :) see?
